Recently, students were surprised with a SWEET lesson on geology! We used Starbursts to model the entire rock cycle in one hands-on science lesson.
How We Did It
- Sedimentary Rock: Students tore and stacked different colored Starburst pieces. This modeling showed how small pieces, or sediments, press together over time.
- Metamorphic Rock: Next, the kids squeezed their candy layers tight using the heat and pressure of their hands. The colors blended to show how extreme pressure changes existing rock.
- Igneous Rock: Finally, we popped the candy packages into the microwave for a few seconds. The melted candy cooled down to form a brand-new, glossy igneous rock.
