Engineering Minds at Work: Our 3rd Grade Bridge Challenge!

We recently put our gifted 3rd graders' problem-solving skills to the test with an exciting STEM activity: the paper bridge challenge! The task was simple in premise but complex in execution: design a bridge using only one single piece of paper that could span a set distance and hold the most pennies.

The results were amazing! Students quickly discovered that a flat sheet of paper wouldn't hold much weight, leading them to experiment with different engineering principles. We saw incredible creativity as teams folded their paper into accordion shapes, channels, and tubes to create strength and rigidity.
The final test was the highlight of the day, with bridges holding anywhere from a handful to over 140 pennies! The winning bridge held an impressive amount, demonstrating a true grasp of structural design and the power of smart design over material thickness.
Witnessing their ingenuity, collaboration, and resilience as they learned from "failed" attempts was fantastic. We definitely have some future engineers on our hands!
